There’s a reason why tales from ancient myths to blockbuster movies often feel familiar, no matter where or when they were told. Beneath the surface of every story lies a pattern of emotional highs and lows—a rhythm of hope, despair, triumph, and setback that resonates with our shared human experience. This emotional arc is the secret heartbeat of storytelling, the invisible thread weaving together narratives across cultures and centuries.

Now, imagine if video games—those sprawling, interactive worlds where players shape their own adventures—could harness this emotional pulse not just in their storylines but in the very design of their levels and challenges. That’s exactly what a team of researchers at New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering, led by Yunge Wen and Chenliang Huang, set out to explore.

All Stories Are One Story, But What About Games?

In literature and film, emotional arcs like the classic “Rags to Riches” or “Tragedy” have been studied and mapped out. But video games, with their branching paths and player-driven choices, have struggled to embed these arcs into their procedural content—the parts of the game that are generated on the fly rather than handcrafted by designers.

The NYU team’s breakthrough was to create a system that uses these universal emotional arcs as a backbone for generating not only the story but also the gameplay itself. They built a framework where the game’s narrative unfolds as a branching graph of emotional states—either rising or falling—and each node in this graph corresponds to a game level with characters, enemies, items, and difficulty tuned to match the emotional tone.

From Emotional Arcs to Dungeon Rooms

To test their idea, the researchers implemented a prototype action role-playing game (ARPG). Each node in the story graph became a dungeon room, populated with NPCs, enemies, and objects generated by large language models (LLMs) like GPT-4o-mini. The difficulty of enemies and challenges was automatically adjusted based on whether the story was on an emotional rise or fall.

For example, during a “Rise” phase, players might encounter friendlier NPCs and easier foes, reflecting hope and progress. Conversely, a “Fall” phase would bring tougher enemies and more tension, mirroring setbacks and conflict. This alignment of narrative and gameplay creates a seamless emotional journey that players can feel as they move through the game.

Players Can Feel the Emotional Flow

To see if this emotional structuring actually mattered, the team ran a study with 16 participants who played two versions of the game: one with the emotional arc guiding the story and gameplay, and one without any emotional shaping. The results were striking. Players consistently rated the emotionally guided version as more enjoyable and engaging. In fact, 81% of participants could correctly identify which version had the emotional arc, even without being told to look for it.

Players described the emotionally guided stories as “more dramatic,” “better written,” and “more realistic,” while the baseline felt “rigid” and “linear.” Yet, some players found the emotional arc version a bit text-heavy or challenging to navigate, highlighting the delicate balance between narrative depth and gameplay clarity.

Why This Matters for the Future of Games

This research points to a powerful new way to think about game design. Instead of treating story and gameplay as separate layers, the emotional arc framework fuses them into a single, dynamic experience. It’s like composing a symphony where the melody (the story) and the rhythm (the gameplay) rise and fall together, creating a richer, more immersive journey.

As AI tools like large language models become more sophisticated, they can help designers craft worlds that adapt emotionally to players, making each playthrough feel unique and meaningful. This could revolutionize not just RPGs but all kinds of interactive media, from visual novels to simulations.

Challenges and the Road Ahead

Of course, the system isn’t perfect. The study’s small sample size and focus on a single game genre mean there’s more work to do to understand how emotional arcs play out across different types of games and player preferences. Also, integrating emotional cues beyond text—like music, visuals, and gameplay mechanics—could deepen the emotional impact even further.

But the promise is clear: by weaving the universal patterns of human emotion into the very fabric of game worlds, we can create experiences that don’t just entertain but resonate on a profoundly human level. As Yunge Wen, Chenliang Huang, and their colleagues at NYU have shown, all stories might be one story—but in games, that story can come alive in ways we’ve only just begun to imagine.
